      <video:description>In our messages recently we have talked about unity in the Church and fighting for unity, including “4 Rules for Resolving Conflict.” (Flandreau talked about it this past week and Deeside will be talking about it this coming week.) But what happens when there is an instance with a person acting in a way that conflicts with the teaching of the Bible? How do we address or handle that? Thankfully, Jesus has given us specific instructions in Matthew 18. And we are going to do this in combination with what we learned about resolving conflict. I thought about including this with a sermon from Romans 4, but that would have been a lot in that message, so consider this a supplement to what is covered in that message. Jesus says there are 3 levels or phases of addressing behaviors that clearly contradict scripture. Level 1 is to lovingly go to that person directly and talk with them about this. When we do this, the way we do it is as important as what we do. None of us like to be told we are wrong, so we are naturally defensive. When the person who comes to us does it out of humility in a way that is loving and gracious, it is much easier to hear the correction. Level 2 is what we do when that person doesn’t respond well to the issue or concern we lovingly brought to them. When that happens we go to them with one or two additional friends (their friends) who have that person’s best interest at heart. These people would join the first person in sharing with the one who is acting contrary to what is laid out in the Bible, what they believe is being done in contradiction to the Bible. All along this process, the hope - the prayer - would be for this person to have a repentant attitude and correct the behavior. The goal should not simply be to point out their flaws. At level 3, the person who is living in a way not in line with the Bible, is confronted by leaders within the Church. The hope is this person would now realize the thing they are doing truly needs to be corrected. Again, this is done lovingly with the goal of repentance that results in change. At the final level Jesus said to treat them as a Gentile or tax collector. Jesus is saying we treat them as we would a non-Christian. We still love them, but they aren’t seen as part of the Church. This final step, this final level, seems hard…maybe even harsh. It’s supposed to. There are consequences to knowingly rejecting and choosing to continuously reject God’s instructions for our lives. And we don’t get here without first lovingly and humbly offering to walk with them as they repent from whatever the sinful behavior is. This is a lot, I know. And not a super-fun topic. But it is best to go through it now and not when we are in the middle of an issue with someone who is part of The Rescue Church. Additionally, this shows the loving way we are to help each other remain faithful to the life God has called us to. Your Christian walk isn’t intended to be only about you. It is about the Body of Christ. We are one body, one Church, called to unity…for our good, the good of the Church and to point people to Jesus. “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.” Matthew 18:15-17 ESV</video:description>
