As I understand it, we were launching into a community of around 2,300 people and just shy of 10 local churches. The county, while it had around 6,300 people, had other communities that also had local churches. So, does a community really need another church or another expression of a local church that is already in the community? Theologian and Presbyterian Pastor Tim Keller had a lot to say about church planting in the first two decades of the 21st century. In a December 2015 blog post, Keller again stressed the value of new churches with the words, “I believe that there is no more powerful way to reach a city with the gospel than to plant new churches in it.” He argued new churches, “attract non-churched people,” “increase the generosity base for all ministries in a city,” and “renew the older, existing churches” by experimenting with new methods to positively impact the community. While I don’t know if everything Keller alleges is statistically accurate, we can look back anecdotally in Flandreau and the other communities The Rescue Church is in, and know there are people who have chosen Jesus as Savior and Lord through the ministries of The Rescue Church. We know the people who are The Rescue Church have contributed by volunteering and financially giving in the community. In communities we are in, at least two-thirds of what Keller stated was true has, in fact, proved true. We also see multiple churches in a singular town in the Bible. Romans is widely believed to have been to the Christians in Rome and not a singular local Roman church. If we are to take seriously the instructions of Jesus to “make disciples” and “love people” maybe new churches (or new expressions of a church) in a community with previously existing churches is ok. Maybe it is more than ok. Is it possible it could actually be a good thing if done well? “What does it look like to be done well?” you may ask. I hope to talk more about that in the weeks ahead.
